چکیده

We present the results of a systematic investigation of spectral evolution in the Z source GX 349+2, using data obtained during 1998 with Proportional Counter Array (PCA) on-board the RXTE satellite. The source traced a extended normal branch (NB) and flaring branch (FB) in the color-color diagram (CD) and hardness-intensity diagram (HID) during these observations. The spectra at different positions of Z-track were best fitted by a model consisting of a disk blackbody and a comptonized spectrum. A broad (Gaussian) iron line at ∼ 6.7 keV is also required to improve the fit. The spectral parameters showed a systematic and significant variation with the position along the Z-track. The evolution in spectral parameters is discussed in the view of increasing mass accretion rate scenario, proposed to explain the motion of Z sources in the CD and HID.

A study of accretion discs around rapidly rotating neutron stars in general relativity and its applications to four Low Mass X–ray Binaries

We calculate the accretion disc temperature profiles, disc luminosities and boundary layer luminosities for rapidly rotating neutron stars considering the full effect of general relativity. We compare the theoretical values of these quantities with their values inferred from EXOSAT data for four low mass X–ray binary sources: XB 182030, GX 17+2, GX 9+1 and GX 349+2 and constrain the values of s...

Forty Years of X-Ray Binaries

In 2012 it was forty years ago that the discovery of the first X-ray binary Centaurus X-3 became known. That same year it was discovered that apart from the High-Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs) there are also Low-Mass X-ray Binaries (LMXBs), and that Cygnus X-1 is most probably a black hole. By 1975 also the new class of Be/X-ray binaries was discovered. After this it took 28 years before ESAs INTE...

New Results for Two Optically Faint Low Mass X-Ray Binary Systems

We present optical photometry of the low mass X-ray binary systems GX 349+2 (=X1702-363) and Ser X-1 (=X1837+049). Extensive V RI photometry of the faint optical counterpart (V = 18.4) to GX 349+2 reveals a period of 22.5 ± 0.1 h and halfamplitude 0.2 mag. This result confirms and extends our previously reported 22 h period (Wachter & Margon 1996). No color change is detected over the orbit, al...

The X-ray fast-time variability of Sco X-2 (GX 349+2) with RXTE

Sco X-2 (GX 349+2) is a low-mass X-ray binary and Z source. We have analysed ∼156 ks of Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer data, obtained in 1998 January, on this source. We investigated the fast-time variability as a function of position on the Z track. During these observations, Sco X-2 traced out the most extensive Z track ever reported from this object, making this the most comprehensive study thu...

A Search for Iron Emission Lines in the Chandra X-ray Spectra of Neutron Star Low-mass X-ray Binaries

While iron emission lines are well studied in black hole systems, both in X-ray binaries and Active Galactic Nuclei, there has been less of a focus on these lines in neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries (LMXBs). However, recent observations with Suzaku and XMM-Newton have revealed broad asymmetric iron line profiles in 4 neutron star LMXBs, confirming an inner disk origin for these lines in neu...
